“Remember those in prison as if you were their fellow prisoners, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering” (Hebrews 13:3).

A woman in prison feels lonely, despised, fearful, neglected, and unloved. She may be deserted by her family; in fact, some are in prison because of the false accusations of family members. In some countries prisoners live in overcrowded, deplorable prison conditions, lacking proper food, medical treatment, needed personal items, or positive communication. Prisoners fear beatings, isolation, rape, and starvation. One of the greatest destroyers in prisons around the world is the lack of hope.

In many countries Christians are arrested and placed in horrible prisons because of false accusations. Often there is little hope that they will ever be released, because the authorities fear the masses who demand that these Christians be executed.

The Word of God has the power to give hope and to restore purpose and joy to the lives of prisoners. Knowing God and experiencing his love empowers prisoners to “be content whatever the circumstances” (Philippians 4:11). Radio programs carry God’s Word into prisons.

TWR Women of Hope/Project Hannah uses radio programs to teach women in prisons about health care: building positive relationships; the developmental needs of children; and dealing with anger, fear, loneliness, and other powerful emotions. Even more important, it offers hope and healing through Jesus Christ. Visiting prisoners, praying with and for them, giving small gifts, and teaching God’s truths show God’s love and brings hope into their lives.

One prisoner called the Angola office to express her joy: “Good morning, Sister Marcolina. This is Sónia speaking from the region of Viana. Sister, I will be released today and will not want to go straight home. I want and I need to go first to a church.”
