When You Feel Spiritually Dry: How to Reconnect with God Again

When You Feel Spiritually Dry: How to Reconnect with God Again

It can feel discouraging, but dry seasons are not a sign that your faith is failing. Often, it’s an invitation.
TWR Woman of Hope Devos TWR Women of Hope

There are seasons in life when God feels distant.

Your prayers feel routine. Scripture feels flat. Worship doesn’t stir your heart the way it once did. You might even wonder, what changed?

If you’ve ever felt spiritually dry, you’re not alone— and more importantly, you’re not far from God.

Dry Seasons Are Not the End of Your Faith

It can feel discouraging, but dry seasons are not a sign that your faith is failing. Often, it’s an invitation.

Throughout Scripture, we see people who walked closely with God experience seasons of silence, waiting and longing. The Israelites wandered in the desert… for 40 years. Sarah, Hannah and Elizabeth waited for the Lord to open their womb. David cried out for deliverance. These moments didn’t mean they were alone, but rather, there was deeper work being done.

The Lord drew near to each of the examples listed above, and countless others mentioned in the Bible, to show himself intimately as a faithful, loving Father. He draws near in your wilderness seasons, too.

Sometimes, God uses quiet seasons to:

  • Grow our dependence to a place of deeper trust
  • Remind us that faith isn’t built on feelings alone
  • Draw us into a more honest relationship with him

Simple Ways to Reconnect with God

If you feel spiritually dry, you don’t need a dramatic reset— just an honest, willing heart. Jesus promises rivers of living water to fill you, just as promised to the Samaritan woman at the well (John 6). The beautiful thing is, for those who trust in Christ, we already have access to the throne of grace.

1. Pray honestly, not perfectly
You don’t need the “right words.” Simply begin with where you are:
“God, I feel distant. I don’t know what to say, but I want to encounter your presence again.”

2. Return to Scripture— even when it feels quiet
God’s Word is alive and active, even though you might not feel it in the moment. Commit to showing up, and take heart that faith is greater than your feelings. The plant that is watered the most consistently flourishes.

3. Create space for stillness
Our world is noisy. Sometimes, reconnecting with God begins by simply sitting in silence and inviting him in. Rather than talking at him, allow him to speak.

4. Make a change where needed
Ask God if there is any part of your spiritual rhythms that he wants you to tweak. Sometimes, this requires sacrifice on our end. You might not get it right away, but keep asking, and trust that he will show you.

God Has Not Moved Away

It may feel like God is distant, but he has promised to be with you always.

Even in silence, he is present.
Even in dryness, he is working.
Even when you feel nothing, he is near.

“For I am convinced that neither death nor life… nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God…” (Romans 8:38–39)

A Quiet Reminder

For many women around the world, access to Scripture, community or encouragement is limited. And yet— even in isolation— God meets them.

Sometimes, a single message of hope or a simple reminder of truth becomes the turning point in a dry season.

A Gentle Invitation

If your spiritual walk feels dry right now, don’t walk away.

Lean in.

God is not asking for perfection— just your presence.
